Traveling to Wae Rebo is a bit challenging, but it’s a perfect adventure destination for trekking enthusiasts. Wae Rebo is known as the village above the clouds. Its geographical location is 1,200 meters above sea level. Valleys, hills, and forests surround the traditional village, creating a stunning view.

The natural surroundings create a cooler climate, and in the mornings, a thin mist shrouds the village. Wae Rebo is part of Satarmese District, West Manggarai Regency, Flores, East Nusa Tenggara.

Advances in technology and modernity have also contributed to the development of this village. Electricity is available, albeit limited. One enduring cultural feature is the seven main houses of the residents, known as Mbaru Niang.

These houses are cone-shaped and feature distinctive thatched roofs. UNESCO even designated Wae Rebo Village as a World Heritage Site in 2012. Wae Rebo Village has approximately 44 families, and they focus on agriculture. Residents grow tubers, cloves, and coffee. Visitors can enjoy the local specialty coffee while trekking in Wae Rebo.

Route to Wae Rebo

Trekking enthusiasts should definitely try this trip. Wae Rebo can only be reached by walking for about 4-5 hours from the nearest town. By preserving their traditions and culture, the local community offers an experience unlike any other. To reach the location, there are trekking routes that can be taken to make the journey easier.

Wae Rebo Village is only accessible on foot from two villages: Denge and Dintor. These two villages serve as the main gateways for access by car or motorcycle.

Both villages also offer accommodation and several restaurants for refueling before the climb. From Labuan Bajo, it’s best to choose the right transportation to ensure a smooth journey. The following routes are available:

Route 1

Trekking in Wae Rebo can begin from Labuan Bajo by car via Ruteng. The fare for a ride ranges from IDR 100,000 to IDR 300,000 per person. After arriving in Denge Village, the journey continues uphill to Post 1. You can walk or use a local motorcycle taxi to reach Post 1. The cost of renting a motorcycle taxi is around IDR 20,000 to IDR 50,000.

To reach Post 2, it takes approximately 2-3 hours through an uphill forest area. Head to post 3, where a wooden gong (gong) is hidden to signal the arrival of visitors to the village. The journey takes about an hour through coffee plantations on a flatter, downhill road.

While it may seem small, it’s a good place to rest for a while. Food and bathroom facilities are available, though the area still feels local. Afterward, you can resume your journey by motorbike and resume the climb. The walk takes approximately 90 minutes.

Route 2

Most visitors prefer this route, renting a motorbike to Denge, as it’s considered quicker. From Labuan Bajo, the drive to Lembor takes about 1.5 hours. You can then take the coastal route to Nagili.

However, the motorbike must be pushed to reach the location, as the road is twice blocked by water. After a two-hour journey, you’ll reach Dintor Village, heading to Denge. After that, you’ll embark on a trekking ini Wae Rebo, which takes approximately three hours.
